DOC format guide

DOC is the classic Microsoft Word binary document format used by older office workflows.

You may still need DOC when exchanging files with legacy enterprise tools or archival office documents.

Best for

  • Older Word workflows
  • Legacy enterprise compatibility
  • Document migration

On Convert Bench

DOC plays a fairly flexible role on Convert Bench because it can be used both as an upload format and as a destination format.

If you start with DOC, some of the direct outputs currently available include SVG, BMP, ICO, ICNS, IFF, and more. Going the other direction, formats such as BMP, ICO, ICNS, IFF, JPEG, and more can also end up as DOC.

When this format is a good fit

DOC is mostly a compatibility format now. It still matters when you are dealing with old Microsoft Word environments, enterprise systems that have not fully modernized, or archived documents that need to stay readable in the format people originally used.

What to know before converting

For new document work, DOC is usually not the cleanest default because DOCX is more modern and broadly practical. DOC becomes useful when an older system specifically requires it, but it is rarely the format teams choose for fresh, collaborative writing unless compatibility is the deciding factor.

Practical conversion notes

  • If nobody in the workflow explicitly needs DOC, DOCX is usually the more sensible editable document format to keep moving forward.
  • After converting into DOC, open the file in the target editor once to check layout, numbering, and spacing in the environment where it will actually be used.
  • DOC works in both directions on this site, so compare target choices before converting and keep the original file until you are happy with the result.
